Here's the biggie - how much does a freelance copywriter actually cost?

Brace yourself for the answer: "It depends!"

Yeah, I know, not the simple reply you were hoping for. But here’s the thing, every copywriter's rate is different, and here's why:

  1. Project type: A blog post? Quick and easy. A 20-page white paper? Not so much. The complexity of the project plays a big role in pricing.

  2. Experience level: Want a seasoned pro? Expect to pay more, but you'll get speed and expertise. Newbie? It’ll be cheaper, but may take a bit longer and come with a learning curve.

  3. Niche expertise: Need someone who’s an expert in a super specific field? That’s going to cost more. Generalists are great, but niche specialists command a premium.

  4. Research required: The more you provide upfront, the less you'll pay. If your writer has to dig deep into research, the price goes up.

  5. Deadlines: Need it yesterday? Quick turnarounds come with a rush fee. Good copy takes time, so the faster you need it, the more you’ll pay.

So, what’s the ballpark? According to ProCopywriters, the average daily rate is around £440 per day. You can keep costs down by hiring a junior copywriter (around £250), or if you're looking for a top-tier or niche expert, expect to pay anywhere between £800 to £2,000+.

Project Types

Here’s a rough idea of what you might pay for different types of content:

  • Web Pages: £150 - £500 each

  • Blog Posts: £150 - £1,000 (500 - 1000 words)

  • Emails/Newsletters: £85 - £600 each

  • Ads: £85 - £1,500 each

  • Landing Pages: £300 - £2,000 each

Sounds like a lot? It’s not if you consider the quality and expertise you're getting. Cheap doesn’t always mean bad, but you often get what you pay for.

Another thing to consider is that some copywriters will ask for a 50% upfront deposit, especially for larger jobs. This ensures they secure the time they need in their schedule - after all, they might be turning away other work.

While there's no definitive answer to how much a copywriter will cost, remember that finding the right writer is priceless.
